The visual and performing arts curriculum at The Stony Brook School is based on two essential truths:
first, that the creation process enables students to notice and explore the richness and complexity that can be found in the everyday world around them; and
second, that the language of art provides a unique means for students to articulate and communicate the discoveries made during that exploration.
The Stony Brook School requires the completion of a minimum of one credit in the arts for graduation. Students are encouraged to participate in various co-curricular activities involving the arts: music programs such as concert choir, chamber singers, chorus, instrumental ensemble, chamber orchestra, and instrumental and voice lessons; visual arts programs including drawing, painting, ceramics, photography, and art gallery openings and exhibitions; and a major theatrical production put on each year by the School’s Theatrical Arts Society (TAS).
All arts programs are held in Carson Auditorium, a dedicated arts facility complete with a choir rehearsal room, theatre, spacious art studios, art gallery, and six individual music practice rooms.
