The first step in the SBS application process is to inquire. If you have not already filled out our inquiry form electronically or in paper form we invite you to do so now by clicking here. Once you complete the inquiry form, we will add you to our database of prospective families.
Please note that SBS only accepts the Standard Application Online (SAO). We encourage you to pay close attention when reading the instructions on the SSAT website. The application fee for domestic students is $100 while international students will pay $250. Please note that SBS does not provide application fee waivers.
SBS offers an early application deadline (December 17, 2018) and a standard application deadline (January 31, 2019). For those applicants for whom SBS is their first choice, we encourage you to utilize the early enrollment process and complete all steps by December 17th. All other applicants are welcome to use our standard enrollment process and complete all steps by January 31st.
Please note that applications received after the early enrollment deadline will automatically be considered with the pool of applicants for standard enrollment. For those applicants that miss the standard enrollment deadline, their application files will be reviewed after March 8, 2019. SBS has rolling admissions after March 8th. Please contact the Admissions Office (firstname.lastname@example.org or 631-751-1800 x1) for more information.
Upon completion of the Student Biographic Profile and submission of the application fee, please contact the Admissions Office via telephone at 631-751-1800 ext. 1 or email@example.com to schedule an interview. All applicants must interview in order to complete the application process. For those applicants that cannot interview on campus, an interview via Skype or Zoom is available.
Prospective international students are welcome to schedule a supplemental interview through Vericant. Vericant conducts interviews with students around the world and gives them an excellent opportunity to showcase their personality and skills. Please note that the supplemental interview is optional for international applicants, with exception to those who are Chinese citizens. We invite you to contact the Admissions Office with any questions.
Chinese applicants should click here for more information about their interview process.
Interviews for early enrollment must be completed by December 17th, while interviews for standard enrollment must be completed by January 31st. We encourage applicants to schedule their interviews well in advance of the deadline because slots will fill up quickly.
Applicants to Grades 7-10 should take the Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT). When registering for the SSAT please include the code for The Stony Brook School (7510). Please note that the SSAT typically requires registration to be completed three weeks in advance of the test date so please plan accordingly.
Applicants to Grade 11 and 12 should submit a PSAT, PreACT, ACT, or SAT score report. Please note that applicants entering 11th grade do have the option of taking the SSAT and we will accept those scores if the PSAT, ACT, or SAT are not available.
All applicants for whom English is not their first language are required to submit a TOEFL score report. Even if the applicant has studied in the United States for several years, the TOEFL is still required. When registering for the TOEFL please use the following code (8083).
Please note that any applicant with a 504 Plan, IEP, or seeking accommodations must submit a recent neuropsychological testing report or a psychoeducational testing report. Please send the report to firstname.lastname@example.org in PDF format.
The Stony Brook School requires an English teacher recommendation and a math teacher recommendation from the current teacher (2018-2019 academic year). Furthermore, SBS requires completion of the Principal/Guidance Counselor Recommendation. All forms should be sent electronically via the SAO.
Families interested in applying for financial aid should complete an application by February 1st. Financial aid applications will still be considered after this deadline but the school cannot guarantee that funds will still be available. Any family applying for financial aid should indicate their desires on the application. Please note that financial aid decisions are made based on a family’s demonstrated financial need and determined on a case by case basis. The vast majority of financial aid is allocated to domestic applicants. We request that all domestic applicants submit their financial aid documents to TADS. After a preliminary review of the information, TADS will determine the family’s eligibility for financial aid and calculate an award. The Admissions Office will review the analysis done by TADS and make a final decision. International applicants should complete the International Financial Aid Application Form. The Admissions Office will then determine the family’s eligibility for financial aid.
For those applicants that are offered acceptance, the financial aid award will be delivered along with the acceptance letter.
SSAT Test Dates
The Stony Brook School is an approved test center for the SSAT. We administer most test dates with the exception of the January test. Students should register directly online with SSAT and use our school code 7510 if planning to test at our center.
We consider requests for Flex SSAT Testing. If Flex SSAT Testing is requested, please contact our SSAT Coordinator: Molly Shteierman
