How to Apply

We want to thank you for your interest in applying to The Stony Brook School. We look forward to working with you and your family as you embark on this exciting journey from inquiry to enrollment.

  • Step 1. Online Inquiry Form

    The first step in the SBS application process is to inquire. If you have not already filled out our inquiry form electronically or in paper form we invite you to do so now by clicking here. Once you complete the inquiry form, we will add you to our database of prospective families.
  • Step 2. Online Application Due by January 15, 2018

    Please note that applications received after the deadline will be reviewed as space is available. Please contact the Admissions Office ( for more information.

    Please note that SBS only accepts the Standard Application Online (SAO). We encourage you to pay close attention when reading the instructions on the SSAT website. The application fee for domestic students is $100 while international students will pay $250. Please note that SBS does not provide application fee waivers.

    Applicants will receive their decision on March 10, 2018.
  • Step 3. Campus Interview to be completed by January 31, 2018

    Upon completion of Step 2, please contact the Admissions Office via telephone at 631-751-1800 ext. 1 or to schedule an interview. All applicants must interview in order to complete the application process. For those applicants that cannot interview on campus, a Skype interview is available. Chinese applicants should click here for more information about the interview process.
  • Step 4. Admissions Testing Score Reports are due by January 15, 2018

    Applicants to Grades 7-10 should take the Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT). When registering for the SSAT please include the code for The Stony Brook School (7510). Please note that the SSAT typically requires registration to be completed three weeks in advance of the test so please plan accordingly.

    Applicants to Grade 11 and 12 should submit a PSAT, ACT, or SAT score report. Please note that applicants entering 11th grade do have the option of taking the SSAT and we will accept those scores if the PSAT, ACT, or SAT are not available.     

    All applicants for whom english is not their first language are required to submit a TOEFL score report. When registering for the TOEFL please use the following code (8083).

  • Step 5. Teacher Recommendations are due by January 15, 2018

    The Stony Brook School requires an English teacher recommendation and a math teacher recommendation. The recommendations can be sent electronically via the SAO.  
  • Step 6. Transcripts are due by January 15, 2018

    Each applicant must arrange for the Admissions Office to receive the following items:
    • Final report cards/transcripts from the previous two years
    • Report card/transcript for the current year, which should include grades from at least one marking period
    There are two options for sending transcripts/report cards:  
    1. Items can be sent via the SAO
    2. Items can be scanned and sent via email to
    We suggest that applicants wait until late November or early December to request their teacher recommendations, which will provide teachers with adequate time to evaluate the applicant.

    For International Applicants: Please include an english translation when submitting your transcripts if they are in a foreign language.
  • Step 7. Applications for Financial Aid are due by February 1, 2018

    If you are applying for Financial Aid, please indicate your desires on the application. Please note that financial aid decisions are made based on a family’s demonstrated financial need and determined on a case by case basis. The vast majority of financial aid is allocated to domestic applicants. We request that all domestic applicants submit their financial aid documents to TADS. International applicants interested in applying for financial aid should contact the Admissions Office ( After a preliminary review of the information, TADS will determine a family’s eligibility for financial aid and calculate an award. The Admissions Office will review the analysis done by TADS and make a final decision.
