How to Apply

We want to thank you for your interest in applying to The Stony Brook School. Please note that decisions will be released on March 10, 2017.  

The deadline for applications is January 16th, however, applications may still be submitted after that date.  Please contact the Admissions Office (631-751-1800 x1 or before you start the process.

  • Step 1: Online Application Due by January 16, 2017

    Please note that The Stony Brook School also accepts the Standard Application Online (SAO) by SSAT.  If you are applying to more than one school you may want to consider using the SAO. The nonrefundable fee of $100 ($250 for international applicants) must be included with each application. Please note that the instructions for Steps 4 and 5 will be slightly different for the SAO. We encourage you to pay close attention when reading the details on the SSAT website.

    Please note that if you decide to submit an application to The Stony Brook School via the online portal, do not submit another application via SSAT. Submitting more than one application will delay processing.
  • Step 2: Interview to be completed by January 31, 2017

    Upon completion of Step 1, please contact the Admissions Office via telephone at 631-751-1800 ext. 1 or to schedule an interview. All applicants must interview in order to complete the application process. For those applicants that cannot interview on campus, a Skype interview is available. Applicants from China should click here for more information about the interview process.
  • Step 3: Admissions Testing Score Reports are due by January 16, 2017

    Applicants to Grades 7-11 should take the Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT). When registering for the SSAT at please include the code for The Stony Brook School (7510). This will expedite the process.

    Please note that the SSAT typically requires registration to be completed three weeks in advance of the test so please plan accordingly. Applicants to Grade 11 may submit their PSAT scores instead of taking the SSAT.

    International applicants along with any student for which English is not their first language should submit a TOEFL score report.  When registering for the TOEFL please use the following code (8083).

    Any applicant with a WISC or with an evaluation of a learning style difference and who would like to be considered for the Academic Support program must submit that testing in addition to the above via email in PDF format.
  • Step 4: Teacher Recommendations are due by January 16, 2017

    The Stony Brook School requires an English teacher recommendation and a math teacher recommendation. The recommendation forms should be uploaded into the online portal by the teachers after they receive your email requesting a recommendation. Please follow the instructions for sending teacher recommendations inside the online portal. 
  • Step 5: Transcripts are due by January 16, 2017

    Each applicant must arrange for the Admissions Office to receive the following items:
    • Final report cards/transcripts and any standardized testing from the previous two years 
    • Report card/transcript for the current year, which should include grades from at least one marking period
    There are three options for sending transcripts/report cards:
    1. Items can be scanned and sent via email to

    3. Items can be uploaded in the online portal
    We suggest that applicants wait until late November or early December to request their teacher recommendations, which will provide teachers with adequate time to evaluate the applicant.

    For International Applicants: Please include an english translation when submitting your transcripts.
  • Step 6: Applications for Financial Aid are due by February 1, 2017

    If you are applying for Financial Aid, please indicate your desires on the application. Please note that financial aid decisions are made based on a family’s financial need and determined on a case by case basis. We request that all applicants submit their financial aid documents to TADS. After a preliminary review of the information, TADS will make the information available for the Admissions Office to review and make a final decision.
