Thank you for your interest in applying to The Stony Brook School. We look forward to working with you and your family as you embark on this exciting journey from inquiry to enrollment.

The Stony Brook School admits students and provides equal educational opportunities in accordance with applicable laws and regulations and without regard to race, color, religion, creed, ethnicity, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, or gender. The School does not discriminate against students on the basis of any of the above protected classifications in the administration of its educational, athletic or admissions policies.

The first step in the application process is to inquire. If you have not already filled out our inquiry form, we invite you to do so now by clicking here. Once you complete the inquiry form, we will add you to our database of prospective families.

The Stony Brook School offers two options to apply.

We recommend that all applicants use our custom Stony Brook School application through SchoolAdmin. Our office also accepts the Standard Application Online (SAO). The application fee for domestic students is $100, while international students will pay $150.

Upon submitting the Student Biographic Profile and paying the application fee, please contact the Admissions Office (admissions@sbs.org or 631-751-1800 x1) to schedule an interview. We encourage you to schedule the interview well in advance of the deadline as slots will fill up quickly.

Please note that before interviewing with a member of our office, applicants who are Chinese citizens must submit a minimum TOEFL score of 95 or a minimum Duolingo English Test score of 125. Our office does not use or accept TOEFL's MyBest score to evaluate an applicant. Scores of past tests are valid if taken within one academic year of the application deadline.

Standardized Testing Optional

At this time, standardized testing (SSAT, ISEE, PSAT, SAT, ACT) IS NOT REQUIRED as a part of the application process. If you have any testing that you would like to submit via the parent portal, you will see the option to do so.

English Language Testing (For Non-Native English Speakers)

All International applicants, for whom English is not the primary spoken language, either the TOEFL or Duolingo English Test results are required.

Please contact the Admissions Office at admissions@sbs.org for further questions.

IEP/504 Plan Learning Accommodations

Please note that any applicant who is seeking learning accommodations with a 504 Plan or an IEP must submit a recent neuropsychological testing report or a psychoeducational testing report. This can be uploaded within the parent portal once you apply.

SBS requires an English teacher recommendation and a math teacher recommendation from the current teacher (2023-2024 academic year). If your family is applying for Early Enrollment, you may use recommendations from your child’s teachers from the 2022-2023 academic year.

Families must request recommendation forms from their teachers within the application portal. If school personnel experience any trouble receiving these forms or sending them back to the Admissions Office, please contact us (admissions@sbs.org or 631-751-1800 x1).

Each applicant must arrange for the Admissions Office to receive the following items:

  • Principal/Guidance Counselor Recommendation Form
  • Final report cards/transcripts from the previous two academic years
  • Report card/transcript for the current academic year, which should include grades from at least one marking period or one quarter
Transcripts/Report Cards can be sent via either electronic application or can be scanned and sent via email to admissions@sbs.org.
For International Applicants: If transcripts are in a foreign language, please include a notarized English translation.

Families interested in financial aid can start the application process on Friday, September 1st, 2023. If you are applying for Early Enrollment, your family should complete the process (the application and supporting financial documents) by FridayDecember 1, 2023. If you are taking advantage of Standard Enrollment, your family should complete the process by Thursday, February 1, 2024. Financial aid applications will still be considered after these deadlines, but the Admissions Office cannot guarantee that funds will still be available.

We request that all domestic and international applicants submit their financial aid documents to the Clarity Portal. After a preliminary review of the information, Clarity will determine the family’s eligibility for financial aid and calculate an award. The Admissions Office will then review the analysis and make a final decision.

Any family applying for financial aid should indicate their desires on the application. Please note that financial aid decisions are made based on a family’s demonstrated financial need and are determined on a case-by-case basis. SBS does not provide merit aid or merit scholarships. The vast majority of financial aid is allocated to domestic applicants.

Applicants who are admitted will receive their financial aid award along with the acceptance letter.
