Educating the Mind, Body, and Spirit

The Stony Brook School's founders envisioned a school that would combine rigorous academic challenge with a commitment to the Christian faith. Their vision has endured, and is very much a reality here at SBS today. Among our founding headmaster Dr. Frank E. Gaebelein's legacies is his innovative approach to holistic education in a Christian context. “The day has long passed, if indeed it was ever present,” he says, “when learning meant only what went on in the classroom and nothing more.”

This is not to say that we are not committed to a high standard of excellence in classroom teaching—quite the opposite. Instead, our rich and textured classroom learning experiences serve as a jumping off point in our “whole student” approach to education. Because we are a boarding school, our students are able to engage in various subject matters with their teachers in myriad environments and circumstances. It is not at all unusual to see a student and her teacher lingering for a conversation about that day's teaching or tomorrow's test as we filter out of the dining hall after a meal, or in a dorm lounge once the day is done. Our classes regularly travel together to off-campus events and cultural destinations that add new layers of nuance and enrichment to in-class lectures and discussions. Lessons learned in our arts and athletics programs are brought back to our academic buildings, and vice versa. Frequent chapel services allow our students to digest and reflect upon the week's teaching in a context of spiritual investigation and restoration.
When they graduate from SBS, 100% of our students go on to college - many to the best schools in the nation.  But what's more, they are equipped to lead and to serve with character and integrity.

In this section of our website, you can browse our course listings and learn more about the exceptional SBS faculty who bring these matters to life. We trust you will find evidence here of our unparallelled commitment to academic achievement and a lifelong love of learning.

If at any time, as you browse these pages, you find you have a question about our academic offerings or philosophy, we invite you to contact the Academic Office. We would be so pleased to hear from you.
