Test Information

Standardized tests are an important requirement for admission to most colleges and universities. The two most critical aspects of a student’s application are the high school transcript and standardized test scores. There are two tests available to students, the SAT and the ACT. Colleges accept either one. For the most part, SBS students submit the SAT, for which we are a test center. The ACT is available at a local high school and transportation arrangements may be made with the faculty. International students will need to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), and should see the college counselor for more information or contact TOEFL directly.

Here is the suggested timeline for the PSAT, SAT and Subject Tests:

The SAT is an aptitude test consisting of three sections, each having scores from 200-800.

The Subject Tests are specific, content-based exams, scored on the same scale and schools may require two or three of them. Typically, a college requires a math test and a second test of the student’s choice. Engineering programs frequently require a Physics Subject Test. It is best if the student takes an exam following the course at Stony Brook. For example, if a student studies Advanced Placement Biology in sophomore year, he should strongly consider taking the Biology Subject Test in May of that year. Individual guidance is given to our students throughout the academic year and the faculty will recommend the appropriate testing to the students.
