COUNSELOR
IN TRAINING: Sessions 1-2 (4 Weeks), Co-Ed; Grades 10-12,
$ 850
This program is an intensive counselor-in-training program
for tenth, eleventh, and twelfth graders. The CIT’s
schedule is balanced so participants become aware of each
aspect of being a camp counselor. Daily lectures include instructional
swimming, discipline philosophies, special needs of children,
child abuse awareness, and other topics. CITs are expected
to keep a brief daily log, complete a weekly summary of their
experience, and conduct an extensive case study. To pass the
course, CITs are expected to attend each daily meeting, complete
each written assignment, attend and pass an ARC Basic Rescue
Course, and display an ability to lead games, present a Bible
story and grasp the camp’s philosophy. It may be impossible
to employ every graduate of our CIT program. The program is
designed to prepare counselors for day camp counseling. All
graduates are given any help requested in future job placement.
All CITs receive a camp shirt, juice and fruit at lunch, and
a daily snack. The CIT program is one four-week session. The
first half of the course will focus on instruction and observation,
but during the second half CITs will be placed with groups
and will have the opportunity to lead activities and interact
with campers.
EXPLORERS:
Sessions 1 & 2, Co-Ed; Grades 5-8, $680
The Explorers program is a must for the active camper who
loves the outdoors! Each day campers set out for an exciting
adventure on Long Island. Typical explorations include hiking
on the Paumonauk Trail or at Bethpage State Park, biking on
the Rocky Point or Cathedral Pines trails, canoeing in Port
Jeff Harbor and on the Nissequogue River, swimming at different
beaches, and indoor rock climbing. Campers need to bring their
own bike on biking days. A schedule of trips is provided at
the beginning of each session. Campers need to bring
their own bike on biking days. Due to the off-campus nature
of the program, campers must bring their own lunches.
ADVENTURE EXPLORERS:
Sessions 1 & 2, Co-Ed; Grades 7-10, $730
This adventurous program will include all the elements of
Explorers, but on a more rigorous level, for older or more
advanced campers. The Adventurer group will embark on a 3-day,
2 night backpacking trip to a county park or national forest
in the tri-state area (the trips may vary depending on the
session). This camp is limited to 12 participants, so register
early! Each camper’s skills and abilities will be evaluated
the first two days of the camp to ensure that they can maintain
the more rigorous level of Adventure Explorers. A schedule
of trips is provided at the beginning of each session. Campers
need to bring their own bike on biking days. Due to the off-campus
nature of the program, campers must bring their own lunches.
FUTURE
ENGINEERS OF AMERICA: Sessions 1 & 2, Co-Ed;
Grades 3-9, $695
Future Engineers of America, also known as
FEA, offers an exciting and hands-on, eyes-ahead program for
scientific adventure, exploration, and technological skills
development. The program includes four components –
science, computers, technology, and aviation & rocketry.
The daily schedule rotates, so that each camper gets to experience
each component, each day. There is also time set aside for
outdoor games, Biblically based devotions, free swim, and
an exciting field trip. The campers are divided into smaller
groups by grade to allow for age-appropriate instruction and
interaction. All of the projects and supplies, as well as
field trips, are included with the program fee. FEA takes
full advantage of the facilities at The Stony Brook School
by using the high school science and computer laboratories.
- SCIENCE:
In the science component, campers conduct
experiments in the biology, chemistry, and physics laboratories.
The study of chemical reactions and life sciences, as well
as interpretative skill development, is emphasized.
- COMPUTERS:
FEA campers have access to the school’s PC laboratories
for the computer component of the program. Campers learn how
to more effectively traverse the Internet and better use the
information they gather. They will also use programs like
Microsoft Word, Excel, and
Power Point, as well as learn how to create
a web page. In addition, campers learn about the nuts and
bolts of how a computer operates.
- AVIATION AND ROCKETRY:
FEA campers explore the mystery, wonder, and excitement
of flight through the building of advanced model rockets and
balsa wood model airplanes. A highlight of the rocketry component
is the rocket launch that traditionally takes place during
each Family Night.
- TECHNOLOGY:
In the technology component FEA campers will work with a variety
of hands-on activities that explore principles such as buoyancy,
electronics, and aerodynamics. Campers will build a variety
of motorized vehicles and put these different principles into
practice. Older campuers will learn to use the programmable
LEGO robot kits.
JEANS-IN-MOTION:
Sessions 1 & 2, Co-Ed; Grades 3-9, $800
Jeans-in-Motion offers young horse-lovers an opportunity to
experience the thrill of equestrian riding, as well as the
reward of caring for horses on a daily basis. Experienced
English riding instructors determine the appropriate lesson
group based on each camper’s age and experience. Campers
are taught English riding basics, such as walk, trot, canter,
posting, and jumping, as well as how to properly use riding
equipment. In addition, campers learn the details of caring
for horses, including bathing, brushing, feeding, and even
mucking a stall.
Four
days each week, Jeans-in-Motion campers receive riding lessons
and ground instructions, plus they enjoy arts and crafts,
Biblically based devotions, and free swim. Once a week the
group enjoys a fun or educational field trip. The Stony Brook
School Summer Programs requires that campers come prepared
to ride on the first day of the session. In order to prevent
saddle sores and injuries, campers must wear long pants and
shoes or boots with a heel. English riding helmets will be
available at the farm for each camper to wear while riding.
MINI-BROOKERS:
Sessions 1 & 2, Co-Ed; Grades 1-2, $600
If your camper is into games and activities try our Mini-Brookers
camp. Mini-Brookers combines all of the classic activities
of Mini-Sports with an emphasis on games and activities, rather
than sports. Mini-Brookers will provide a balance for those
campers who are less excited about sports but want a camp
experience. Mini-Brookers will have Swim Lessons, Arts &
Crafts, Bible Time, a morning and afternoon snack, and free
swim in the afternoon, as well as plenty of fun games times
MINI-SPORTS:
Sessions 1 &
2, Co-Ed; Grades 1-2, $600
Mini-Sports is designed to offer younger campers typical day
camp activities combined with traditional sports camp instruction.
Each session will offer the opportunity to try out a variety
of sports and activities the first week of the session. During
the second week, the camper will have the opportunity to focus
more on one sport and then participate in a tournament at
the end of the week. Throughout the summer, the campers will
participate in a variety of activities and receive instruction
in basketball, soccer, volleyball, track & field, and
T-Ball. The sports vary by session based on availability of
fields and gymnasiums. MINI-SPORTS
also allows time for the camper to enjoy Arts & Crafts,
Bible time, a morning and afternoon snack, swimming lessons,
and free swim in the afternoon.
JUNIOR
BROOKERS: Sessions
1 & 2, Co-Ed; Grades 3-6, $670
Junior Brookers is a co-ed program designed to encourage physical,
social, and academic growth. Under the guidance of experienced
counselors, campers get involved in many different activities
each day. Junior Brooker activities include Arts & Crafts,
indoor and outdoor game periods, daily swim lessons, and a
free swim. The group will go on at least one fun or educational
field trip each week. Past trips have included mini-golf,
bowling, the beach, and Sweetbriar Nature Preserve. Junior
Brooker campers will experience a wide range of fun activities
as they graduate from our Minis programs and prepare to move
on to our more advanced specialty and sport camps.
ROBOTICS:
Sessions 2, 3, Co-Ed; Grades 7-12, $400
This exciting robotics camp is a challenging opportunity for
campers to create with their minds and hands. Campers design
robots capable of completing multiple tasks, and then program
the robots to do them as efficiently and quickly as possible.
Campers use the sophisticated LEGO NXT Robotics Controller
and LEGO parts to design their robot, and then use drag and
drop programming on the computer to make their robot do what
they want it to do. Instructors, equipment, and facilities
are the same as those used by The Stony Brook School's FIRST
Lego
League award-winning team. Each
week the group will complete challenges from a Lego League
competition and finish the week with a competition.
SAT
PREP COURSE: Sessions 1 & 2, Co-Ed; Grades 10-12, $800
The SAT Prep Course will be offered twice this summer, from
July 6- July 20 and from July 20 - August 3. The course is
taught by Stony Brook School faculty member Mr. Michael Hickey.
In previous sessions the average improvement has been close
to 200 points with some students improving as much as 400
points. The content of the course will include test taking
strategies, skill development, timed drills, and individual
feedback. The course will begin and end with a full practice
SAT administered on Sunday afternoon from 2 - 6 PM. The classroom
sessions will be held Monday - Thursday evening, from 6:30
until 9:30 pm. The course fee is $800, which covers all
instructional materials.
