Marine and Environmental Programs offer a wide range of exciting of both on-the-water and land-based camps for young sailers, marien science, and environmental science students to safely learn and improve their sailing skills, explore and care for Long Island's exciting environment, and develop positive leadership abilities.

Nature Quest (grades 5-7), Eco-Challenge (grades 7-10), and the Costa Rica Expedition (grades 7-12) are all land-based programs and form our new Environmental Science curriculum. Nature Quest and Eco-Challenge will combine work on campus in our science labs with field trips to local sites. The Costa Rica Expedition will allows campers to explore an exotic rainforest.

Beachcombers (grades 5-7), Marine Explorers (grades 7-10), and Research Under Sail (grades 9-12) integrate marine science with sail training, stewardship, and other fun water activities options such as fishing and tubing. Island Cruisers (grades 7-12) teaches campers how to sail, race, and cruise overnight on 30-foot keelboats. Regatta Sailors (grades 7-12) instructs competitively sailing in two-man high performance dinghies.

These marine camps are well equipped to safely launch young mariners into a valuable learning sea experience. The Stony Brook summer marine camps utilize 25' to 30' cruising keelboats as floating classrooms for marine science and big boat sailing, a fleet of high performance sailing dinghies for competitive sailing, and 17' recreational day-sailors for basic sailing. 13' safety skiffs, 22' fishing vessels, and a 115' floating dock facility in Port Jefferson Harbor further support the instructional programs.

Professionally trained and experienced instructors supervise these on-the-water camps. All keelboat and fishing-boat captains possess US Coast Guard shipmaster's licenses. Marine science staff includes experienced educators and former members of National Ocean Science Bowl Teams. Sailing instructors have successfully competed in high school, college and keelboat regional events. Directing this qualified staff is Capt. George Linzee, longtime SBS marine science and sailing instructor, who is certified by both the American Sailing Association and US Sailing and a member of the national board of high school sailing. You can contact Capt. Linzee directly with questions at (631)786-3293.

All campers will be tested in the camp pool on the first day to determine swimming level for safety purposes; life jackets will be provided and required at all times when underway.

NATURE QUEST: Sessions 1 & 2, Co-Ed; Grades 5-7, $680
Nature Quest is a great program for campers interested in learning about our local environment. Campers will explore the different eco-systems of our 55-acre campus and investigate their discoveries in our science labs. The group will also take at least one field trip each week to a local site. There are also many fun activities throughout the day, such as arts & crafts, a free swim period, and game times.

ECO CHALLENGE: Sessions 1 & 2, Co-Ed; Grades 5-7, $730
Senior Summit has a new name, which reflects our new emphasis: each person can make a difference in the world. Using our enthusiasm, talents, and sense of discovery, we will be involved in various projects in the area to help care for creation. Some of these activities will include restoring native habitat, wood working projects, animal observations, and frequent trips to natural areas. We will also take an overnight trip each session for one or two nights. Sue and Jack will be back to lead us in this new direction!

COSTA RICA: Session 3 (August 11-17), Co-Ed; Grades 7-12, $1775
The 2008 expedition will be geared toward service and adventure. Continuing the theme of "Eco-Challenge", that each person can make a difference, we will be helping local people and animals in addition to exploring a mountain cloud forest, snorkeling in the Pacific Ocean, and white water rafting. There will be an informational meeting during our open house on March 8, as reservations must be made as soon as possible. A $500 deposit is due on April 1 so that we may purchase airline tickets. There must be 8 people signed up by April 1 in order for this trip to proceed. The dates and prices are subject to change based on flight price and availability, but the current plan is to depart for Costa Rica on August 11 and return on August 17. The price of $1775 is based on the current airline rates.

BEACHCOMBERS: All Sessions, Co-Ed; Grades 5-7, $765
Beachcombers have fun finding, observing and collecting Long Island marine life while they learn to sail and crew on a cruising sailboat. Starting out each day in a marine lab, campers learn about life in the sea and how to set up and care for saltwater aquaria. Beachcombers then launch out into Port Jefferson Harbor on a 26' Bristol and a 25' Barfield to learn sailing and navigation while exploring for marine life at anchorages featuring various ecosystems. Daily activities can include beach hikes, collecting with plankton or seine nets, swimming, tubing, and an environmental stewardship project. Campers can also choose fishing or canoeing as an alternative option to a day of sailing. Each session will feature at least one day exploring a south shore ocean beach and another visiting the Atlantis Aquarium in Riverhead. Due to the off-campus nature of the program, campers must bring their own lunches.

MARINE EXPLORERS: All Sessions, Co-Ed; Grades 7-10, $765
To be a good sailor, one also needs to be a good oceanographer. Marine Explorers learn in a fun, hands-on way meteorology, tides, currents, waves, shore formations, marine life, charts, and navigation while they learn to sail two auxiliary cruising sailboats, a 28' Pearson and a 27' Irwin, in Port Jefferson Harbor and Long Island Sound. Marine Explorers will enjoy the bonding experience of challenging on-the-water teambuilding activities as they become proficient keelboat crews who have learned how to navigate amidst the wind, waves, currents, and other boats. Three non-motorized 17' day sailing sloops supervised by an instructor on a safety boat will sometimes be used to offer camper-only crew opportunities that develop self-sufficiency and leadership skills. A well-equipped oceanography lab is provided to support the on-the-water activities. This program includes a trip to a south shore ocean beach to learn about and enjoy the waves. Marine Explorers can also elect a day of fishing as an alternative option to a sailing day. Due to the off-campus nature of the program, campers must bring their own lunches.

RESEARCH UNDER SAIL: Sessions 1 AND 2(4 weeks), Co-ed, Grades 9-12, $1450
Research Under Sail is for high school students with a major interest in marine science that are eager to study and preserve the coastal environment and desire to learn the necessary sailing skills as a member of a sea-going research team. The goal of this camp is to investigate an environmental issue that is currently impacting the north shore coast of Long Island over the course of the four week session. Utilizing two 30' Alberg auxiliary sloops as floating research platforms to gain access to coastal sites, a team of up to twelve students under the guidance of two professional captains and marine educators will crew the vessels and gather data on the recent "invasion" of Asian Shore Crabs. Building on the research begun last summer, the group will continue to investigate the impact of the crab invasion. Linked with advisors at SUNY's Marine Science Research Center, this program is an outstanding opportunity for students seeking to enter Intel-type research competitions. Due to the off-campus nature of the program, campers must bring their own lunches.

REGATTA SAILORS: All Sessions, Co-Ed; Grades 7-12, $795

For both experienced and beginner middle or high school students who want to learn how to sail and race in high performance sailing dinghies, this program utilizes the camp's 19 two-man Vanguard 420s to immerse participants in large fleet and team racing regatta competition. Grouping sailors into sections based on age and sailing experience, this program will help sailors of all skill levels, both beginning and advanced, to progress through crewing and skippering roles and prepare for interscholastic sailing competition. Training includes shore instruction, off and on water drills, video evaluation of development, racing rules, and regatta competition. Due to the off-campus nature of the program, campers must bring their own lunches.

ISLAND CRUISERS: Session 3, Co-Ed; Grades 7-12, $850
Learn the joys of life aboard a sailboat as you cruise the waters of Long Island Sound. Two 30-foot Alberg auxiliary sloops are used to immerse participants in a full two-week voyaging program that includes basic and intermediate training in sailing, seamanship, navigation, racing, and environmental awareness. The schedule after the training includes several day-sails excursions and a two-day overnight cruise to an exciting Long Island Sound destination that could be a historic maritime center or secluded shore with unspoiled scenery. Campers are assigned to a particular keelboat by age, gender, and experience. Invite a friend to join the program and they will be placed on the same crew. Due to the off-campus nature of the program, campers must bring their own lunches.
