1. Individual
Student Support
The case managers meet with individual students three times
each week to:
-
Plan for the week ahead
- Review the previous week
- Address any content or organizational issues
2. The Highlands Program Learning
Strategies
The Highlands Program Learning Strategies addresses one factor
that influences learning – natural abilities, as assessed
by the HIGHLANDS ABILITY BATTERY. The ability scores
indicate how quickly and easily a person takes in and recalls
information using a particular learning channel and specific
suggestions are given for how best to use this knowledge to
maximize learning.
3.
The Analytical Thinking Course
Using the Mock Trial format, students have an opportunity
to develop their analytical thinking skills. This six-week
course is offered in the fall to 10th – 12th graders
and serves as an excellent source of enrichment for students
desiring to develop these skills.
4.
The Writing Lab
On Wednesday evenings from 7:30 – 9:30 pm, tutors will
be available to aid students with their writing assignments.
This team will:
-
Point out problem areas in student writing
- Direct them to descriptions of the writing problems
- Encourage them to study or review areas of grammatical or
stylistic ..weaknesses that occur
in their own writing
- Encourage them to revise their own writing
Students
will do their own work, but will have the support and expertise
of the writing lab team.
5.
The Master Student Program
The
Master Student Program is designed to assist the already motivated
student who welcomes help in moving from being good to being
excellent. The student needs to clearly express a personal
desire to be part of this program and a willingness to commit
to doing what it takes to achieve his or her goals. The program
is offered to middle and upper school students separately
and at two levels. A five-week course is offered at each level
with the students meeting once each week. Students in the
program also receive some individual coaching and follow-up
suggestions for continuing to implement the skills and strategies
they have learned.
5.
Life Coaching
In
the academic context, the coach assists the student in developing
strategies to overcome obstacles that inhibit him or her from
achieving and sustaining success. The student will have a
private meeting once each week for one hour.
Students
can benefit from a coach who can train him or her in Life
Skills and Personal Development including:

Study skills
- Time management
- Organizational skills
- Goal setting
- Communication skills
- Conflict resolution
