Summer News 2010
The summer is a great time to rest, have some fun
and get ready for a new school year. In terms of college
admissions preparation, here are some suggestions
for making the most of your time:
Seniors:
Time
to start your applications!!! As you know, the Common
Application will be available online on August 1 at
www.commonapp.org.
There will be an application workshop on campus on
Wednesday, August 4 at 7:30 pm in Gaebelein computer
room.
Your
College List – please continue to work on this and
if possible, visit your prospective schools.
SAT
Preparation and registration – If you plan to take
the October SAT at The Stony Brook School on October
9, please register ASAP! We fill quickly for this
test date. Register online at www.collegeboard.com
Test
preparation is key. Please spend time this summer
preparing for your tests this fall. You may use whatever
method fits your schedule, budget and learning style.
Practice helps!
Summer
Reading – I recommend The Gatekeepers by Jacques
Steinberg for anyone interested in the inside workings
of an admissions office at a competitive college.
It is well-written and informative. Other books of
interest are: Colleges That Change Lives, Lauren
Pope; College Unranked, Lloyd Thacker; Harvard
Schmarvard, Jay Mathews
Underclassmen:
College
visits – It is never too early to visit colleges,
especially if you can check out some schools while
vacationing in an area with schools of interest.
Summer
Reading – see the note above.
Activities
– use your time well and continue to develop skills
in your areas of interest. Mission trips, community
service, sports, the arts, reading – all of these
are great options! .
