"The sense of community is very strong and born out of relationships - faculty to students, faculty to faculty. Because of this, students want to achieve and to do well - for their teachers, for their coaches, for each other, as part of a team."
- Assistant Headmaster Keith Singer

"Stony Brook was a significant changing point for me. I did not have sense of who I was or where I was going until I came here. Like all adolescents, I was asking, "Who cares about me?" "Do I have value in this world?" and "What is the value that I bring?"
- Harold Spooner '70

"I can't imagine SBS without dorms and a faculty ready to open their homes and hearts to you. I don't even remember it as a school but as a second home."
- Megan Hurst Carmody '99

"Some of the most stirring questions about our passage through those turbulent teen years, our expectations, and our fears were explored late at night, with classmates who grew into lifelong close friends in a nurturing boarding environment. . . . And then who could ever forget those times when one or more would challenge the 'lights out' rule and the rest of us endured collective punishment for our protective silence."
- James Coane '88

"Although I was a day student, being at a boarding school prepared me for college life. I was able to handle college residential life better because of it."
- Danielle Braaten Hedgepeth '93

The environment in our residence halls is critical to our mission as a school. Residential life is family life. It's where you learn by experiences as you see how faculty live their lives, as you do your workjob, and as you learn to live with a roommate.
