For
first-year international students not fluent in English, the
International Student Partnership (ISP) is a required program.
Designed as an English language and American culture immersion
program, students flourish through the combination of classroom
instruction and personal relationships with American students.
About
the ISP program:
Nine days before the school year begins, international students
are welcomed into the homes of Stony Brook faculty or the
families of day students. The international students attend
intensive English as a Second Language (ESL) classes. The
program also includes a three-day trip with their American
partners to different locations. The international
students also attend special dinners and cultural events and
experience "everyday" American life in the local
community.
Partnership:
The School will pair each international student with an American
partner of the same gender and approximately the same age
and grade. Partners may be from any state or US territory.
The partnership continues throughout the school year since
solid relation-ships develop between the studetns in the first
two weeks of the ISP program.
Over Long Weekend in October, the international tudents travel
to the homes of the American students. The students also mutually
choose another weekend during the early part of the first
semester to spend together, and will attend at least two ISP
sponsored events during the year. It is our hope that the
partners build a solid and lasting friendship.
Program
Cost: The cost for the year-long ISP language
and cultural exchange program is $3,700 per international
student, in addition to the boarding tuition. The
total payment is due in full before the ISP program begins.
Transportation expenses to and from the United States
are not covered by the program fees or tuition.
Academic Requirements:
Once the school year begins, international students
are required to take ESL classes,
as well as participate fully in all areas of school life.
All first year students are enrolled in ESL I or ESL II classes
and will continue on to Expository Writing in the following
years. Other academic classes will be based on previously
completed coursework and grade level. All international students
must be fully mainstreamed by their senior year.
Guardian in the United States:
All international students are required
to have a guardian living in the United States. Since the
dormitories are closed during Thanksgiving Break, Christmas
Vacation and Spring Break, students will need a guardian to
live with if they are not going back to their home country.
Please provide the School with the guardian's name, address,
and telephone number.
