The Middle School curriculum stresses skill building in a nurturing environment that encourages self-discipline and imagination. The development of mind, soul, and body unfolds within a framework of Christian values under the watchful care of a committed faculty.

During the 7th grade year, a double period gives students a powerful

grounding in English; this experience will prepare them well for the rigors of the Upper School and college. During the 8th grade year, a cross-pollination of themes and skills used in English, Social Studies, and Bible encourage critical thinking skills and introduce students to a multifaceted world with historical depth and spiritual complexity.

The commitment to small class size (14-16), as well as a structured approach to personal organization, time management, and responsibility, give middle school students the environment and skills to thrive on the road to college. As students become excited about their own learning and growth, they are encouraged to recognize that this was made possible, in large part, by others in the community. The Stony Brook School prizes service to one another and to those outside of our academic community; outdoing one another in good deeds is magnificent exercise for the soul.

Preparation for Upper School

The Middle School prepares students for the challenges they will face in the Upper School program, where they will continue the college preparatory process. The program’s commitment to self-discipline and a student’s imagination encourages positive work habits, personal discovery, and critical thinking skills, in an environment that kindles an excitement for learning.
