The
Cum Laude Society was originally founded in 1906 to honor students
“who have demonstrated academic excellence and good character,
honor, and integrity in all aspects of school life.” The
Stony Brook School chapter was instituted in 1930. Up to 20%
of the senior class may be inducted into the Society,
and
underclassmen in the top 10% receive certificates of
recognition. Honorees must attain a high level of academic
achievement and possess exemplary character. Eligibility for
seniors requires the following: 1)
A combined junior-senior GPA of 3.5
or higher 2) At least two AP courses 3) At least two four-year
sequences in mathematics, science, foreign language, or art.
The
School chapter and the Assistant Headmaster select honorees.
Disciplinary problems, poor attitude, poor attendance, or
poor performance may disqualify otherwise eligible students.
For one-year seniors, only the senior grade-point average
is considered for Cum Laude purposes. One-year seniors must
enroll in at least two AP courses during their senior year.
