Laser,
Club Collegiate 420, Widgeon, Interclub, O’Day 17,
Sailing Dinghy, Raven, Bristol 22, Alberg 30, and Morgan
30. All Stony Brook students have the opportunity to sail
on both historic and modern famous ships, such as the H.M.S.
ROSE, the world’s largest operating wooden ship, and
America’s Cup 12-meter champions, such as the WEATHERLY
and AMERICAN EAGLE.
Yacht Racing and Cruising
Team: The yacht team has been entering regattas
along the eastern seaboard since 1990 on the SEA WIND, a
seaworthy Alberg 30 auxiliary sloop. This graceful craft
with classic lines has full electronic instrumentation and
space to sleep six during overnight trips. Varsity letters
are awarded to those students that campaign SEA WIND in
a specific number of weekend regattas. A range of American
Sailing Association Certification courses are available
to SEA WIND crew members.
Dinghy Sail Team:
The dinghy sail team competes in double-handed 420 and single-handed
Laser one-design craft. Fall competition includes district
and open regattas. In the spring, dual and quad-meet team
racing is added to the district and national elimination
regattas. The dinghy sail team also campaigns a 24-foot
Raven class sloop in local class regattas.
