Poet and journalist Harvey Shapiro, will speak at the annual Pierson Curtis Lecture Series, on Tuesday, May 8, at 7:30 p.m. at the Ward Melville Heritage Center in Stony Brook Village. The lecture is free and open to the public. Please call (631) 751-1800 x513 to RSVP or for questions.
Shapiro's theme for the evening will be contemporary poetry that comments on Biblical themes - "Midrashic" poetry. He has selected seven poems (three of which are his own) that allude to different narrative episodes in Genesis. He will discuss the relationship of a contemporary poem and the ancient text.
Shapiro spent many years as editor of the New York Times Magazine and the New York Times Book Review. He is also a WWII veteran. Throughout his adult life he has written poetry. Thirteen books of his poems have been published.
