On Saturday, February 7th, a team of five Stony Brook School students matched their competitive spirits and knowledge of marine and environmental science against similar teams from 15 other top schools in the NY State regionals of the National Ocean Science Bowl Competition held at SUNY Stony Brook. Advised by Captain George Linzee and led by team captain John Mahon (Setauket), the team also included seniors Richard Barker (East Patchogue), Samantha Lee (Islip), and Alex Reiner (Old Field), and sophomore Kyu Ree Kim (Korea). Observing the event in preparation for next year's competition were sophomores Si Yi Li (China) and Jingwei "Eleanor" An (China). In the morning The Stony Brook School was placed in a very tough 4-school division but was able to earn a ninth place raking out of the 16 schools by lunch time. In the single elimination round after lunch, The Stony Brook School was narrowly defeated by MacArthur High School who went on to do well in the double elimination round.
At the end of the competition, the University organizers of the event awarded The Stony Brook School Team the Annual Ocean Bowl Sportsmanship Award for the positive competitive spirit displayed by the team in general and for several displays of outstanding character during event. Twice John Mahon stopped the competition to correct errors in the scoring that unfairly benefited The Stony Brook School over the other team. All on the team expressed how much fun the event was and felt that given the limited time they were able to put into prep, they had put in a good show with their 9th place finish. Kyu Ree Kim and classmates are looking forward to prepping for next year's event.
