Students Compete
in the Regional Ocean Bowl
On Saturday, February 10th, a team of five Stony Brook School students matched their competitive spirits and knowledge of marine and environmental science against similar teams from 15 other top schools in the NY State regionals of the National Ocean Science Bowl Competition.
Advised by Capt. George Linzee and led by captain Rachelle Falk (Eaton's Neck), the team also included Alex Reiner (Old Field), John Mahon (Setauket), Samantha Lee (Islip), and Richard Barker (East Patchogue).
In the morning round-robin session hosted by SUNY/SB's School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, the Stony Brook team solidly defeated Ossining HS, tied Regis HS, and narrowly lost to St Ann's Prep. In the single-round elimination after lunch, Stony Brook solidly defeated Leon Goldstein HS to earn a position in the top 8 and move into the afternoon double-elimination bracket. In the exciting two matches that followed, Stony Brook strongly challenged, but eventually lost to the 3rd (St Ann's) and 2nd (Mt Sinai) place winners in the contest.
Capt. Linzee is proud of the team for its strong performance. All enjoyed learning more about the blue planet we live on, as well as the excitement of the matches.
