..............      BEACH CLEAN UP EFFORTS BY THE STONY BROOK SCHOOL

STUDENTS AND FACULTY FROM THE STONY BROOK SCHOOL COLLECTED TRASH ALONG THE BEACH IN PORT JEFFERSON AS PART OF A NATIONAL BEACH CLEAN UP INITIATIVE.

A group of about thirty students and faculty from The Stony Brook School attended the beach clean up Saturday, September 12th. They broke up into six small groups to collect trash along the beach in Port Jefferson. The students then recorded all of the items found which is helpful to determine the origin of the waste. Once determined, changes can be recommended to waste facilities regarding the size of filters needed to eliminate certain products from negatively impacting the environment.

Participating Stony Brook School students are from Captain George Linzee's Marine and Environmental Programs and from Ms. Amy Helm's H.E.A.R.T community service organization. These school initiatives correlate with Mr. David Johnson's local Coastal Steward Organization which coordinates area beach clean up activities. The information gathered by The Stony Brook School students and by other community organizations is forwarded to Ocean Conservancy which collects data and notifies the appropriate Washington environmental agencies. The Stony Brook School has been involved in this program for the last sixteen years.
