The Stony Brook Girls Cross Country team has completed an undefeated season. The team has tremendous enthusiasm and a drive to run their best at all their meets. Some girls have worked through recovery of injuries and illnesses in order to help with the team's continued success.
Stony Brook won the last league meet 18 - 49 against Port Jefferson, where many of the Lady Bears ran a season best and dominated the top 6 finishing times. 1st place honors went to Alexis Fernandez (Hauppauge) with a completion time of 20:59 for the 3.1 mile (5K) course. Finishing second was Alexandra Russo (Bellport) with a time of 23:22. Alexandra Damianos (St. James) came in 4th place at 24:03. Running to a 5th place finish was Liz Andersen (Pocono Lake, PA), 24:31. Following right behind was Ayana Aaron (Nesconset) at 24:50 to finish in 6th place.
The top seven Lady Bears proceeded to the League Championship: Ayana Aaron, Liz Andersen, Alexandra Damianos, Alexis Fernandez, Sarah Higgins (E. Setauket), Alexandra Russo, and Elizabeth Shin ( Korea). Award winners for finishing in the top 10 of Class 'D' were: Aaron, Damianos (24:30.79), Fernandez (21:15.53), and Russo (23:33.03).
Suffolk girls NYS cross country championship qualifiers are: Damianos, Fernandez, and Russo from The Stony Brook School. The Lady Bears will run again on Saturday, November 8 to participate in the NYS Cross Country Championships at Sunken Meadow.
The Stony Brook Boys Cross Country team has led an impressive season as well. The entire boys team has qualified to run at the NYS meet as their fast performances at the league championships earned them the distinction of Class 'D' Champions.
