CELEBRATING TWO DECADES OF DECLAMATION

Twelve finalists competed in The Stony Brook Schools' Twentieth Annual Declamation Contest sponsored by the SBS Upper School English Department in January. The surrounding community watched as the students competed to determine the winner of three categories: oration, humor and drama. The declamation winners were Drama: Kayla Winston '10 (Stony Brook) with Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare; Humor: Luke Paige '11 (Port Jeff Sta.) Don Quixote, by Miguel de Cervantes; and Oration: Joshua Rubman '12 (Port Jeff) with "Graduation Address" by Bono.

Finalists Emily Andersen (Pennsylvania), Aileen Catapano (Southold), David Gonzalez (Centereach), Cem Hayirli (Smithtown), Yi He (China), Joshua Kim (Flushing), Kyu Ree Kim (Korea), Cheul Woo "Charlie" Kwak (CA), and Rebekah Sides (Stony Brook) also gave riveting performances. Shulin "Angel" Jiang (China), a non-competitor and representative of our ESL students, presented "The Call to Faith" by Gene Veith.

The following students provided exceptional musical performances throughout the evening: Forrest Hull (NJ), Bo Mee "Claudia" Kim (Korea), Cheul Woo "Charlie" Kwak (CA), Ji Yoon "Julie" Lee (Korea), Esther Luoh (Taiwan), Lewis Meitz (Huntington Sta.), Mario Montoya (Old Field), and Hayato Nakanishi (Japan).

The judging panel consisted of alumni, parents of alumni and School friends: Jackie Day (President and CEO of The Long Island Museum), Alex Edwards-Bourdrez '72 (Alumni Director at Friends Academy), Bob McCarroll '82 (owner of The Good Steer), Kelvin Spooner '72 (training coordinator for New York City Administration for Children's Services), and Gina Titus (owner of Minuteman Press). All winners received a gift certificate to The Good Steer Restaurant, courtesy of Bob McCarroll.
