The Stony Brook School held its 18th Annual Declamation Contest at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 20.

The surrounding community watched as 9th - 12th grade students of The Stony Brook School competed to determine the winner of three categories: oration, humor and drama. The oration of "2005 Kenyon Commencement Address" by David Foster Wallace rewarded Nara Shin first place. Shan Chowdhury (Elmhurst) earned first place in the Humor category for his presentation of "Ghandi at Bat" by Chet Williamson. Winning first place in the drama division with Walter Wangerin Jr.'s "An Advent Monologue," was Kirsten Seeberger (East Setauket).

Finalists Paul Bisagni (Patchogue), Michael Chung, David Hickey (Stony Brook), John Kanas (East Moriches), Kara Lee (Islip), Michael Pinkerton, Alex Reiner (Old Field), Kim Shannon (Setauket), and Elizabeth Shultz also gave memorable, well-prepared performances. Esther Luoh was the exhibition declaimer, presenting Alfred Noyes' "The Highway Man."

The following students provided exceptional musical performances throughout the evening: Ann Chen, Young In Cho, Charlie Kwak, Kara Lee (Islip), Samantha Lee (Islip), Esther Luoh, Khloe Meitz (Huntington Station), Joseph Oak (Stony Brook), and Olivia Yeargain.

Declamation judges, Stony Brook School alumni from the local community, included Rev. Bruce Dodd, Jr., Pastor of the Cutchogue Presbyterian Church; Stephen Jones, CEO of the Suffolk County Water Authority; Dana Hobbs Laurel, business analyst at Merrill Lynch and corporate liaison for City Harvest; Ilyssa London, NYU graduate and current law school student; and alumni parent Kathy McIvor, Vice President of KJP Associates. Alum Bob McCarroll provided gift certificates to The Good Steer to all winners.
