SBS CHESS PLACED 2nd in SUFFOLK COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

The Stony Brook School varsity chess team placed second in the Suffolk County Chess Championship held on February 7.

In individual pairings, senior Kyryll Gavrylchenko (New York, NY) placed 2nd in the county with 4 wins, while freshman Sam Yeom (Korea), senior Robert Chen (Taiwan), junior Jason Sutjiawan (Indonesia), and sophomore Che-Shin "Matthew" Cheung (Taiwan) each had 3 wins apiece.

The junior varsity team won their section of the tournament as senior Jung-Hoon "Jeremy" Yoo (Korea), seventh grader Gabriel Winston (Stony Brook), and freshman Timothy Miller (Mt. Sinai) all went 5-0 while freshman Yan Xiong (China) went 4-1.

This ended The Stony Brook School's impressive streak of nine straight County Championships. Despite the loss, Head Coach Stan Winston was upbeat, "We lost 4 of our 5 starters from last year, Cold Spring Harbor came back intact. To only lose by 1/2 a point is nothing short of remarkable. We'll be ready for them next year."

In April, the team heads for the United States Chess Federation sponsored SuperNationals IV in Nashville, Tennessee, which promises to be the largest scholastic chess tournament in history.
