STONY BROOK CHESS TEAM
WINS NINTH COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

The Stony Brook School Chess Team won its' ninth consecutive Suffolk County Chess Championship completing an undefeated regular season. The team faced tough competition, trailing by one point into the last round, but managed to outscore the competition 4-1.

Kyryll Gavyrlchenko (New York) and team captain Jeffrey Lin finished with head-to-head victories. Gavyrlchenko finished in first place overall with a perfect 5-0 day, and Lin finished in third place with a 4-1 record. Other Stony Brook varsity players were Wilson Lu (2.5-2.5), Michael Chung (2.5-2.5) and Mick Kim (3-2).

The Chess Team has a promising future as the team swept the awards in the JV Division, led by James Kwon (5-0), Jerry Lin (4.5-0.5), and Nara Shin (4-1).

Stony Brook will compete in the national championships April 18 in Atlanta, Georgia.
