Chess Team Places Nationally

After winning its eighth consecutive Suffolk County Championship, The Stony Brook School sent two chess teams to the National Chess Championships in Kansas City, Missouri, April 13-15, 2007. Each player played seven matches over the three days with matches lasting as long as four hours.

Kyryll Gavrylchenko, Justin Bak, Jeffrey Lin, and Sammy Lee competed in the Open Division (over 1500) competing against some International Masters and finished in the top half.

Patrick Sung played in the Unrated Division winning 4 matches.

Wilson Lu, Robert Chen, Ed Lee, Eric Huang, Mick Kim and Jerry Lin placed fifth of 64 teams in the Under 900 team. This competition tied for the best finish of a SBS team in SBS chess team history.
