Students Partner with Afghan School

Exceding the $3,000 goal, students and faculty of The Stony Brook School continued to give until $10,100 was raised and sent to the Abdul Hali Mazare School in Mazar I Sharif, Afghanistan.

The Abdul Hali Mazare School is one of many schools in Afghanistan that were destroyed in warfare or converted to military use while the Taliban controlled the country. Currently 80% of Afghanistan's females and 50% of the males are illiterate. The money raised will be enough to build a new classroom for the school.

Students and faculty became aware of the school-partnership project last summer when The Stony Brook School History Department Chair Judy Oulund visited with Kim Pulliam '87, who has served as a nurse in Mazar I Sharif, Afghanistan since 1999 (except when expelled by the Taliban in 2001). By participating in this project, The Stony Brook School community is playing a role in preparing the next generation to continue to rebuild Afghanistan.
